World mind sport games in China

Introduction

October 4th-17th 2008, the first World Mind Sport Games will be held in China. The information below is preliminary, and subject to change when we become aware of more details.

General

Each country may compose a team of at most 18 players. As far as we currently know, the following costs are covered by the organisers and the IGF:

  • costs for accomodation in China
  • at most one air ticket in the "open individual" category.

The following are NOT covered:

  • the travel costs (with the exception mentioned above).
  • the participation fee

It is clear that these can be high, especially travel costs, as China is far and flight tickets during the Olympics period will be scarce. Even though we may attempt to attract sponsors, there is no guarantee that this will succeed. Below is a first verion of the policy of the Belgian Go Federation w.r.t. composing a deleguation. If more similar events will be organised in the future we will integrate them in our global selection rules, which may be different from the rules below.

The free participant

According to the IGF, the Chinese Go Association will provide one free return air ticket to each member of the IGF for participation in the open tournament in which only amateurs can compete at the WSMG.
As at the time of the latest BGF board meeting we were not away of this, we did not decide yet on selection criteria for this nearly fully sponsored place. Traditionally, fully payed international deleguations are decided based on WAGC points.

The 4 BGF-sponsored places

The Belgian Go Federation is willing to compose a team and support 4 members financially with 100 euro per person. Candidates should

  • be aware that they should pay all costs not covered by a sponsor themselves. The BGF can not guarantee that sponsoring will be found
  • be of Belgian nationality and reside in Belgium.
  • be member of the BGF in 2007 and 2008.
  • satisfy any requirements of the Mind Sport games.

If more than 4 candidates apply for BGF sponsoring, we give priority to have at least one participation in each of the following categories:

  • Man (1)
  • Woman (1)
  • Pair (2)

If necessary selection will happen through the results of the most recent corresponding Belgian championship, or - in absence of such results - by rating. If sufficient members participate we would much appreciate that they also participate in the category 'team'.

The other places

As each country can send up to 18 players, players not selected to receive the 100 euro sponsoring of the BGF can still apply to be a member of the Belgian deleguation. Minimal requirements are

  • satisfy all requirements of the Mind Sport games (e.g. nationality)
  • be member of the BGF in 2008

If there are more candidates than available places, selection will happen by

  • giving priority to players satisfying the conditions to be eligible for the BGF sponsoring
  • giving priority to Belgian participation in all categories
  • the results of the most recent Belgian championship of the same category
  • rating

Participation fee

Please notice that according to the IGF, a participation fee has to be paid. As at the time of the latest BGF board meeting this was not yet known, the BGF did not decide yet on how to distribute the participation fee costs among the participants and the BGF.

Call for participation

On January 27th, BGF has to send IGF estimated numbers of participants for each event. Therefore we urgently invite interested members to send an email of interest to board at gofed.be mentioning the following information:

  • Name
  • Citizenship (must be Belgian)
  • Country of residence
  • Events you want ot participate in (in order of preference)
  • Will you participate if there is no sponsoring / only 100 euro BGF sponsoring ?
  • Do you have any constraints? e.g. will not participate in individual event if not selected for team event.
