Use of Go programs in human Go tournaments

Just a reminder.

Traditionally we used to play Go human vs human. And up to a few decades ago, computer Go levels were also too low to provide a sensible help to Go players. But nowadays, the strength of AI Go programs has evolved tremendously, way beyond the level of the world top Go pros players.

So for sure, many of us like to use Artificial Intelligence to analyze games or simply to see moves played by computers. And this is perfectly fine and also a modern and efficient way to progress.

But in a human vs human competition, the hidden use of computers spoils the fun of the suspense of a fair game played between players of sensibly around the same levels.

So, for your information, the Belgian Go Federation has some tools to detect such cheating and for the first time these tools have been used to analyze suspicious games and confirm the use of computer assistance.

The cost to pay if you get caught cheating with a computer is a loss of the game and several months exclusion from competition/Go Federation activities.

So for your own enjoyment and the respect of your opponent, please keep computers aside when you are playing tournament games in which they are not allowed.
Thanks !

WAGC: Chinese Ma Tianfang is 2021 amateur world champion (despite a loss against Polish Stanislaw Frejlak)

Chinese Ma Tianfang (7d) won the 2021 edition of the WAGC (World Amateur Go Championship), despite a surprising loss against Polish Stanislaw Fejlak (7d) !

Stanislaw also won against the Japanese representative.
Unfortunately he lost his 2 last games, to the Korean representative, and to Lukas Podpera (CZ).
Had Stanislaw won that last game, he would have been world champion ex-aequo !

Three other players ended with a 5/6 score: the ones from Taïwan, from Korea and Lukas Podpera (in that order).

Stanislaw Frejlak ended 5th, as best player with 4 wins, ahead of Hong-Kong and of the Frenchman Benjamin Dréan-Guénazia (who also beat the Japanese !).

"Our guy" was Jan Ramon, who ended 30th with a 3/6 score and logical results (wins to: Spain 1d, Finland 2d Ecuador 2d; lost to: Croatia 3d, Israël 6d and Canada 7d).

There 57 participants, among whom about the half were physically present in Vladivostok and the other half (Jan f.i.) played on line.

Belgium ended last in the B-league and so is demoted to C-league for the next season ! :-(

Results of the round here: https://pandanet-igs.com/communities/euroteamchamps/rounds/683

FINAL standings: https://pandanet-igs.com/communities/euroteamchamps

Note that in A-league, Russia, Poland, France and Ukraine (who ended in this order) are qualified for the final tour.

8th round of the European Team Championship: 1st win for Belgium (against Turkey, 3-1)

Belgian team got his 1st win of the season, against Turkey (Lucas Neirynck +, Jan Ramon +, Lucman Bounoider +, Gabriel Mercier -) !

Thanks to this win, Belgian is no longer last ranked... but not yet out of danger.

Last round (in which Belgium will play Sweden, a direct concurrent) will be decisive !

The rules specify that the last ranked team will be demoted to lower (here c-league) league whereas the one before last will play a play-off against the 2nd best ranked of the lower league to determine which one will "move" from a league to another.

Interclubs 2021 it's now - result of first round -

The Interclubs season 2021 is ongoing and the first round has already been played. But it's only a start there are still 4 rounds to come...
See results there

This year there are 5 participating clubs: Ath, Ghent GGG, Bruxelles Phénix, Bruxelles Pantin and Leuven.

Who can play ?

If you are a registered player (i.e. fee paid for 2021 in the Federation) from any of these 5 clubs, you can participate - according how many free places there are in your club. If you are interested to participate, please contact at your club your Interclubs capitain or club president.

How are Interclubs games played ?

The Interclubs games are played in teams of 3 vs 3 and the time settings are 1 hour + Canadian byo-yomi 20 stones in 5 minutes.

Once again this year the Interclubs is played in a 5 round round-robin tournament.
Because there is an odd number of participating clubs one club will have to be bye every round (i.e. no play).

The duration of each round is 6 weeks, matches must be played in this period.
The scheduling of the matches is agreed between clubs. The 3 games can be played on different days and times since we play online this year.

7th round of the European Team Championship: Belgium lost against Finland (1-3).

On 13 April, Belgian team lost 1-3 to Finland (Lucas Neirynck +, Lucman Bounoider -, Gabriel Mercier -, Sven Cuyt -).

This means not only that Belgium remains last, but also that the threat of a relegation to C-league is increasing.
But there are still 2 rounds to go to avoid this.
